The hill challenge

 

Like a clock used to mark time, changes in the environment (The hill challenge) mark the effect on the practitioner, which creates a rate (momentum) by giving a regular tick. The rate of the tick depends on your willpower to produce a steady and predictable forward momentum. Therefore, the only way forward is to declare war against the hill, which will enable you to reach your goals.

As the practitioner interacts with the different environments (terrains) of the hill, with the Smart Defences superimposed steps (Being Aware, Prepare, Respond and Improve), they develop routines needed to succeed. In return, the environment (terrains) provides a response to this interaction, thus forming a continuous closed- loop process that builds self-discipline and coaches them through life. The idea is that they will develop the inherent ability to reconstruct and replicate these steps in any given environment whether it be other physical activities (running, baseball, hockey, etc.) or in their work or home life. The challenges faced in these environments will act as the “hill”

logbook was designed, with the Smart Defences: Being Human without Fear or Anger book in mind, to keep your personal record of trainings, events, experiences, and observations. In this system, we recommend choosing an exercise that challenges your skill, power, and endurance; one that forces you to grow physically and mentally. In fact, with this system, you can arrive at the same results through one simple activity: climbing a hill.

When you climb a hill, the “hill” itself becomes your very own coach. It provides the perfect terrain (uphill, downhill, and flat) to challenge you. In its own way, it will become your dojo or studio, but it can also max out your endurance quicker than standard martial arts training. Rather than spending years in traditional martial arts, this system – in coordination with the perfect environment (the hill) – can develop the same level of self-discipline in only a matter of months or weeks. By forcing the development of the important elements of the system, it can transform your mindset and understanding of life's situations.
